70 Year Old Senior Citizen Scores A Goal in a Soccer Match!!
When he was 69 years young...he decided his life was just too boring! "Sitting in front of the TV for year after year...just got old like me" says Danny Torkel. As a life long soccer fan, the Detroit native, opted to play in a local soccer league.
So he joined a local rec indoor soccer team...in quest of oneday proving to himself, he could score a goal. "Watching soccer, I love when the TV announcer says GOOOAAAALLLL!" says Mr. Torkel. When he arrived to practice for his 1st day on a team called the Shock, he knew it was the team he was meant to be on.
"They thought I was the Coach" says Torkel. When he put on his soccer shoes, players started to stare at him. He was a team mate. "I said listen you kids, I am older, wiser, smarter, I can and will be a asset of this team". Practice was rough for the 70 year old man. He once took a uncalled for sliding tackle, which would cause his joints to flare up.
On opening day, the locals had gathered hearing rumors the senior would recieve some playing time. Within 2 minutes into the game, he would slowly sprint onto the indoor soccer field. When BOOM! He would be clipped by a young punk who was only 17 years old, in the unlimited soccer league. "I became enraged at that point" says Torkol.
While running slowly down the field, the senior would slap the kid...in the face! The crowd loved it. Despite being put in the penalty box, his team became inspired. The crowd of about 100 people started chanting..Torkol...Torkol.
When a member of the Shock was tripped in front of the opposing goal net. He was awarded a free penalty kick. Thats when the unexpected happened! The Shock teammate...opted to let Torkol take the kick. At 70 years old, this was perhaps his best chance to score!
The crowd chanting Torkol over and over...he stepped up, and went to his right...but he would fool the keeper by hooking the ball to the left. The soccer ball would find the goal net! Torkol dropped to his knees and began to cry! "I did it...I am a soccer player" said Torkol.
At that point the team made history...instead of continuing the game...they carried Torkol off the field in celebration. Then Torkol handed his teammates his right shoe....they took it down to the field and left it..in the center of the field. The would lose by forfeit...but who cared...when you have a 70 year old senior citizen score a goal on your goal keeper....you know who the real winner is! Go Shock...Congrats Mr. Torkol!
